Postgraduates
Welcome to the Postgraduate Programmes Page. For your assistance you will find below a brief description of the postgraduate opportunities available within the Department.
Application forms are available for download at the bottom of this page.
Postgraduate Programmes
The Department runs a very successful taught Postgraduate Network offering Masters by Research, Masters, Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) and Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) awards. The programme is modular and progessive, suited to both continuing professional development and to research oriented masters.
The taught Masters by Research programme is weighted strongly towards the research based dissertation element of the programme but still has a taught element.
The Department also offers professional Masters education in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) through its internationally renowned distance learning UNIGIS programme (UNIGIS site).
The Department also has an extensive research training programme within the broad area of Environmental and Geographical Sciences leading to the awards of Master by Research, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Research programmes are closely allied to staff research projects - please consult our Research Activities pages for details of current projects and staff interests.
The following programmes are available in September 2009:
MSc Countryside Management (CM) , by distance learning, part-time. Dr Francis Brearley (f.q.brearley@mmu.ac.uk) can answer more detailed or specialist questions.);

We also offer research programmes leading to the awards of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), full-time and part-time.
Funding and Bursaries
Tuition fee levels for EU/UK students for the year 2007-08 are 3240 GBP for the full-time (12 months) taught programmes and 8845 GBP for overseas students. EU/UK part-time students paid 351 GBP per 20 credit unit (2006-07) and normally study 60 credits each year for three years. (Part-time study is not permitted on student visas.) Fees rise a little each year and you should always check with the University when applying. Students are normally expected to find their own sources of funding for postgraduate programmes as the University has very limited funding available - some general advice is available from the University at: Postgrad Funding. Students are expected to have sufficient funds to cover tuition, subsistance and accomodation. For 2006-07 we did have some EU-ESF funded places.
MPhil/PhD
The Research Activities link on the Departmental Home Page should be consulted for current funding for PhD studentships which are always attached to prescribed research programmes.
Where studentships are not indicated as being available applicants must provide their own funding for subsistence and tuition fees. Applications from self funded students wishing to study for a MPhil, MSc by Research or PhD research degree are always welcome. Acceptance will depend principally upon the applicants academic ability, quality of project proposal and relevance to the Department's research programme.
