Research Success in Environmental Science, Human Geography and GIS
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 20 researchers from the Department contributed to highly successful submissions in Earth and Environmental Science and Sociology. 13 Environmental and Earth Science researchers formed part of the UoA17 Earth and Environmental Science submission in which 85% of research activity was rated as internationally recognised or better (45% as world-leading or internationally excellent). MMU is now the third-ranked university for Environmental Science in the North West of England (behind Manchester and Lancaster) and has a similar research quality rating as many pre-1992 universities. 7 Human Geography and GIS researchers from the Department formed part of the UoA41 Sociology submission in which 75% of the research activity was rated as world-leading, internationally excellent or recognised internationally. MMU is now the third-ranked university for Sociology in the North West of England (behind Manchester and Lancaster) and was rated above a number of pre-1992 universities including Birmingham, Liverpool and Leicester. This is a major advance for Human Geography and GIS research at MMU compared to RAE2001 when only 0.5 FTEs were submitted.
